Products, Services & Claims

Whereas the history of P&I was probably dictated by the actual Ship Owner, today the P&I Clubs have had to adapt their thinking to accommodate Charterers as well. In essence the same type of cover, but undeniably requiring a different approach. At Post & Co (P&I) B.V. we have developed wordings and ideas that have become Market standards or guidelines. We service singletons, Time Charterers, small, medium or major Chartering fleets and all of this involves a great variety of Charter Contracts, such as Slot Charters, Space Charters and Container Pooling Agreements. Likewise there is personal attention for the Commodity Trader employing vessels as Charterer and/or Cargo Owner to carry their cargoes, and many, many others.

Since the early 1960's we became heavily involved with the P&I insurance for European inland craft. This type of tonnage operates in a legal environment which is totally different from deep-sea shipping. The absence of Hague/Hague Visby Rules and until recently a greater freedom of contract, or the frequent need for special customer contracts, as well as trading in an environment with quite different legal systems and the introduction of a new legislation, highlight the complexity of the situation. A stringent but different approach to Pollution and other environmental problems and the continued growth of inter-modal shipping shows the need for special insurance cover. Post & Co (P&I) B.V. has responded to those needs. Today we service a portfolio of several thousands of vessels for Owners and a multiple thereof for Charterers, all operating in the European Market.

Following the introduction of the container, the concept of ‘total service’ became a requirement of all major Shippers. This caused the mainline Operator to accept responsibilities with varying liability within the total chain of transport. Quite often the pre- and on-carriage is contracted out to local waterborne Terminals being involved as Shipper or Charterer. Following these developments we have developed for these Terminals some comprehensive liability programs to meet with these and other contractual requirements.

Further to the Terminal Liability and the P&I insurance for Owners and Charterers we are able to complement packages with additional covers such as Ship Owners Liability (S.O.L.), Bunker Insurance and other special liability covers, in order to provide the 'total service' as is required by our clients.

A fair share of our daily contacts in the world of P&I Clubs and at Lloyd's have entrusted us the placing of Re-insurance contracts. Specific knowledge of the trade, combined with many years of experience have given us a special edge in this field.

Placing cover is one thing, handling claims is quite another. These activities should never be confused. We are of the firm opinion that the one cannot go without the other. The claims servicing is done by an experienced Claims Team, knowledgeable in the diversity of claim situations that are so characteristic of shipping. This varies from the straight forward cargo claims to the most complicated Charter disputes. As might be expected there is also a fair share of stowaways or personal injury claims, or wreck removal or pollution problems of whatever nature, involving a variety of environmental intricacies. At Post & Co (P&I) B.V. we have an experienced Claims Department that services our clients 24 hours a day on a world-wide basis through a valuable network of professional contacts.

Obviously we are very proud to act as the official Correspondent or Representative to a number of the major Group P&I Clubs and we happily assist and serve their Members 24 hours a day in case they happen to run into problems or need assistance in our home town Rotterdam, or other shipping centres in the Netherlands, as the case may be.
